Cedar Is a Beautiful Material — We're Not Arguing That
Homeowners ask us about cedar siding more than almost any other product, and it's easy to see why. Real wood grain, warm tone, that classic Pacific Northwest cabin-and-craftsman look — cedar has a texture and depth that manufactured products spend a lot of engineering trying to imitate. Western red cedar grows right here in Washington, it's naturally rot-resistant compared to most softwoods, and a freshly installed cedar exterior genuinely looks great.
This page isn't a takedown of cedar as a material. It's an explanation of why, after years of doing exterior work across Seattle and King County, we stopped installing it as a siding product. The short version: cedar's problems don't show up on installation day. They show up in year three, year eight, and year fifteen, and by then the homeowner is the one carrying the cost — not us, not the lumber mill, and not whoever sold the house before them.

What "Cedar Siding" Actually Covers
Cedar siding comes in a few common forms, and it's worth knowing the difference because they don't all behave the same way:
- Bevel (lap) siding — the traditional overlapping horizontal boards, usually the most exposed to standing water at each lap joint
- Shingles and shakes — smaller individual pieces, more joints and edge grain exposed per square foot than lap siding
- Tongue-and-groove or channel siding — vertical boards, often used for accent walls or gables
All three share the same underlying issue: they're solid wood, and solid wood moves, absorbs water, and needs a maintained finish to keep doing its job. The differences are mostly about how much surface area and how many joints are exposed to the weather, which affects how fast problems show up.
The Grade Problem
Cedar siding is also graded, and grade matters a lot more than most homeowners realize when they're comparing quotes. Clear, vertical-grain cedar with tight growth rings resists cupping and checking far better than lower grades with flat grain and knots. The problem is that clear-grade cedar is expensive, and a lot of what gets installed on mid-range projects is a lower grade that looks fine on day one but moves, checks, and absorbs water faster once it's exposed to weather.
The Maintenance Reality Nobody Puts on the Sample Board
Every wood siding product needs a maintained finish — paint, solid-body stain, or a semi-transparent stain — and that finish is the only thing standing between the wood and the weather. Once it starts to break down, water gets into the wood fibers, and the clock starts on cupping, checking, and rot.
What the cycle actually looks like
- Solid-color stain or paint: typically needs recoating every 5-7 years on a well-maintained, sun-exposed elevation, sooner on north-facing or shaded walls that stay damp longer
- Semi-transparent stain: shorter cycle, often 3-5 years, because it offers less UV and moisture protection
- Each recoat requires washing, scraping or light sanding of failing areas, spot-priming bare wood, and caulking open joints before the new coat goes on
- Skipping even one cycle lets water into exposed end grain and fastener holes, which is where rot typically starts
None of this is unique to any one brand of cedar siding — it's just what solid wood requires to hold up outdoors. The question we ask homeowners is simple: are you planning to actually do this, on schedule, for as long as you own the house? Most people say yes when the siding is new. Fewer people are still doing it in year twelve.
Why Seattle's Climate Is Specifically Hard on Cedar
Every region has weather, but Seattle and King County combine a few specific factors that are rough on painted or stained wood siding:
Driving rain and long wet seasons
Our fall-through-spring stretch means cedar siding here spends months at a time staying damp, especially on north- and west-facing walls that don't get much drying sun between storms. Wood that doesn't get a chance to fully dry out between rain events is wood that's slowly loading up moisture in its fibers.
Moss and biological growth
Seattle's long moss season isn't just a roof problem. Shaded siding, especially under eaves, near mature trees, or on the north side of a house, collects moss, algae, and mildew that hold moisture against the wood surface and accelerate finish breakdown. Removing it without damaging the wood or the finish takes real care — pressure washing cedar too aggressively raises the grain and strips the finish faster than it would otherwise wear.
Salt air near the Sound
Homes closer to Puget Sound and the region's waterways deal with salt-laden air that's harder on exposed fasteners and finishes than inland exposure. Galvanized or standard fasteners can corrode faster in that environment, and corroding fasteners under a wood siding installation are a slow, hidden failure point — by the time you see rust streaking through the paint, the fastener has usually been compromised for a while.
None of these factors are exotic or rare — they're just normal King County weather. But stacked together, they mean cedar siding here needs a tighter maintenance schedule than the same product would need in a drier climate.
Where Cedar Siding Actually Fails
When we've torn cedar siding off a house during a re-side, the failure points are consistent:
- Butt joints and end grain — end grain absorbs water many times faster than face grain, and factory-cut boards rarely get properly back-primed or sealed on-site at every cut
- Lap joints on bevel siding — the overlap creates a place for water to sit and wick upward if caulking fails or wasn't detailed correctly at installation
- Fastener heads — nail holes that aren't properly set, sealed, or painted become tiny entry points for water over time
- Bottom courses near grade — splashback from the ground keeps the lowest courses wetter than the rest of the wall, which is often where rot first appears
- Behind gutters and downspouts with hidden leaks — a small, slow leak can sit against cedar siding for a long time before it's visible from the outside
Individually, most of these are fixable if caught early. The problem is that they're usually not caught early, because the early signs — slight discoloration, a little softness, a hairline check — don't look urgent from the ground.

The upfront cost of cedar and quality fiber cement siding is often closer than people expect — the real gap opens up over the following 15-20 years, in labor and material for refinishing that fiber cement simply doesn't need on the same schedule.
Installation Sensitivity We Didn't Want to Own
Cedar siding is far less forgiving of installation shortcuts than most homeowners assume. Getting it right requires back-priming every board on all six sides before installation, careful end-cut sealing on site every time a board is trimmed, correct fastener selection and depth to avoid splitting, and properly detailed flashing and caulking at every joint and penetration. Skip any one of those steps and you've built in a failure point that won't show up for a few years — long after the crew that installed it is gone.

That's not a knock on every cedar installation out there — it's a statement about what we're willing to warranty our own labor against, and cedar's margin for error is narrower than we're comfortable building a business on.

Before You Commit to Wood Siding

- Ask what grade of cedar is actually being quoted — clear vertical grain behaves very differently than a lower grade
- Ask whether every board will be back-primed and every field cut sealed on site, and get it in the contract
- Ask what the manufacturer warranty actually covers, and whether it covers finish failure or only material defects
- Budget for refinishing as a real, recurring line item — not a maybe
